Of the Place Thereof

Set thy Taverneum where many pass by, yet where a man may pause and behold the things thereof in quietness.

Nigh unto the Entry

It is meet that it stand near the entry of the house, that guests may espy it as they come in.

Along a Fair Wall

Place it upon a fair wall within the hall where men sit and take their meat, that their eyes may rest upon it with ease.

Beware the Great Throng

Set it not where the press of people is great, lest the pieces thereof be jostled or harmed.

1. Of the Place Thereof

Set thy Taverneum in a place where many pass by, yet where men may tarry a while and behold the things thereof.
Let it stand near the entry, or along a fair wall in the hall where guests sit and take their meat, that their eyes may fall upon it with ease.
Yet set it not where the throng is too great, lest the pieces thereof be jostled or harmed.

2. Of the Dividing Thereof

Order thy Taverneum with seemly measure and good order.
Let not all things be heaped together in confusion, but divide them by kind and by story.

  • Vessels and cups of old time in one place.
  • Tools and instruments of ancient craft in another.
  • Paintings and images upon a fair portion of the wall.

Set a small writing beside some pieces, that the guest may know whence they came and what tale they bear.

3. Of the Things that Please the Guests

Choose such things as stir remembrance and wonder among the people.

  • Old tools of husbandry and craft.
  • Vessels, jugs, and cups from former days.
  • Paintings of the town, the mountains, or the life of old.
  • Strange or curious instruments whose use men no longer know.

For guests delight greatly in things that tell a story of the place wherein they sit and take their rest.

4. Of the Spirit of the Taverneum

Let thy Taverneum be not over-great, but fair and well-kept.
A few good pieces, well shown, bring more delight than a multitude set without order.
And if the host speak kindly of the pieces and the tale thereof, the guests shall remember the house with gladness.
